Q: How does the license work?

A: By buying the license you only buy the right to use the fonts. The fonts themselves remain the exclusive property of LudwigType. The price of the license depends on how many computers or devices the fonts will be installed (desktop fonts), on the average number of pageviews per month of a specific website (webfonts), on the number of mobile apps (app fonts), or on the number of titles (eBooks or PDF). Please read our End User Licence Agreement for a detailed overview.

Q: Do you offer more licensing options?

A: Yes. We offer additional licensing options for server use, third-party use, broadcasting, digital advertising, games, e-mail newsletters, e-publishing, desktop software, SaaS products, creator tools, template editors, website builders, and similar uses. Please contact us for details.

Q: Can I upgrade my license?

A: Yes. An existing font license can be extended to any number of users or pageviews. Please get in touch with us and provide your original order information and the upgrade you wish to purchase. You can only upgrade licenses you purchased with us directly. If you had purchased fonts from other distributors, we cannot offer that service.

Q: What is a Corporate Licence?

A: In certain situations, it makes more sense to purchase a Corporate Licence rather than a standard Multiple-User Licence. The Corporate Licence allows the installation and use of the fonts by an entire corporation or other legal entity, covering an unlimited number of users and locations. The costs depend on the size of the company. Optionally, you can cover affiliated third parties by extending this license. If you have any questions please get in touch with us

Q: Can I share a license with my client or service bureau?

A: Licences are not transferable. If your client wants to use the fonts as well he has to purchase a license for his business. If the printer or service bureau needs to install the fonts on their computers they will need to purchase a separate license. If your project genuinely requires passing the fonts to external parties, this can be arranged through a license extension or a Corporate License, please get in touch.

Q: Can I embed fonts into PDFs or digital documents?

A: Yes. Embedding fonts into documents is allowed in a secured read/print-only mode, as long as the document itself is not a commercial product. If the document is a commercial product, such as an eBook, paid PDF, report, template, or publication, an additional eBook/PDF License is required.

Q: Can I embed the font in editable documents like Word or PowerPoint templates or fillable PDF forms?

A: This goes beyond the Desktop and eBook/PDF licenses. When the font is embedded so that others can type or edit text with it (editable office templates, fillable PDF forms), it travels as a working font into other hands, not just as a finished, read-only result. That kind of use is part of the Corporate License, or it can be arranged as a separate extension. A Desktop license covers only static, non-editable output, and an eBook/PDF license covers read-only publications. Please get in touch and we'll find the right fit.

Q: Can I use the fonts on a website?

A: Yes, but live text on websites requires a Webfont License. Webfonts are provided in WOFF and WOFF2 format for use on the licensed domain, including its subdomains, up to the licensed monthly pageview limit. Uploading desktop font files such as OTF to a web server, or converting desktop fonts into webfont formats, is not permitted. You may use desktop fonts to create static, non-editable images or graphics for websites, such as JPG, PNG, SVG, WebP or similar formats. The font files themselves must not be uploaded, embedded, made available, or used as live text on the website. Services or tools where end users can create, edit, style, export, or publish content using the fonts require a separate license.

Q: Can I use the fonts in an App or eBook?

A: Yes. We offer an App License for embedding fonts in native mobile apps, and an eBook/PDF License for embedding fonts in eBooks or commercial PDFs. The App License covers app-controlled text display only. Desktop software, web applications, SaaS products, games, social media tools, creator tools, or products where end users can create, edit, style, export, or publish content using the fonts require a separate license. Please contact us for details.

Q: What counts as one app for an App License?

A: One app title. The same app published on both iOS and Android counts as a single title, and a free and a paid version of the same app also count as one. There is no limit on the number of downloads or users.

Q: What counts as one title for an eBook/PDF License?

A: One title is a single work. All formats of the same work (EPUB, PDF, MOBI) count as one title, and so do its language versions. There is no limit on the number of copies sold or downloaded. Each separate work, including each volume in a series, is its own title. Magazines, journals and anything published on a recurring basis are arranged individually, please get in touch.

Q: Do I need a separate license for my eBook cover?

A: The cover is a static graphic, so it’s covered by a Desktop License, like any other static artwork. The eBook/PDF License covers the fonts embedded inside the publication itself.

Q: Do I need a new license for a new edition of my eBook?

A: An updated version that is free to existing buyers doesn't need a new license. A newly released edition that is sold separately counts as a new title and needs its own license.

Q: Can I use the fonts in a web app, SaaS product, design tool or template editor?

A: Standard Web and App Licenses allow the fonts to be used for displaying text on a licensed website, web application or app. They do not cover products or services where end users can select, edit, style, export, publish or create content using the fonts, such as design tools, template editors, website builders, document editors, merchandise generators or print-on-demand services. Please contact us for a separate license.

How is the company size for a Corporate License measured?

A: By the size of the company as a whole, not only the people who use the fonts. We use three tiers: small (up to 50 employees and €10M annual revenue), medium (up to 250 employees and €50M), and large (up to 2500 employees and €500M). If your employee count and revenue fall into different tiers, the higher one applies. You choose the matching tier when you order; for larger organisations, please get in touch.

Q: Do we pay again if the company grows?

A: No. A Corporate License is perpetual and covers your company as it grows. If your staff numbers increase within the same legal entity, your license keeps covering them at no extra cost.

Q: What happens if the company merges or is acquired?

A: A license isn't freely transferable, but in the case of a genuine company succession, such as a merger, acquisition or change of legal form, it passes to the successor after written notice to us.

Q: Can I modify fonts?

A: We donʼt allow others to modify our fonts, but we are open to user requests and can customize our fonts for you for a reasonable fee. Please contact us for details.

Q: Where can I find the Licence Agreement?

A: You can find the link ‘View Licence Agreement’ on all order pages. You can also click here to view the Licence Agreement.
